Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was aboard a chopper that went down in northwest Iran on Sunday afternoon.
Whether Raisi and anybody else on board survived the disaster is still unknown.
The president was on a visit to neighboring Azerbaijan when the tragedy occurred.
The Iranian minister of interior has said that emergency crews are their route to the scene of the accident.
Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and local authorities were all aboard the chopper that was involved in the incident, according to Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
The Iranian people were asked by the semi-official Fars news agency to keep Raisi in their prayers when the reports surfaced.
Authorities were waiting for more information, Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi said on state TV.
Raisi, who was re-elected president in 2021 at the age of 63, has since imposed stricter morals rules, presided over a brutal crackdown on anti-government demonstrations, and made strong demands in nuclear negotiations with international powers.
