House of Representatives member Ayodeji Alao-Akala (APC-Oyo) has petitioned the Committee on Public Petition to investigate the alleged police assassination of serving NYSC member Iyanda Damilola and to seek justice for Damilola’s family.
While presenting the petition in Abuja on Thursday, the congressman revealed that the late man’s brother, Iyanda Israel, was one of his constituents.
Reports indicate that Damilola was slain at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) graduation event in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Israel vehemently denied in a plea dated April 26, 2024, that he, his late brother, or any of his invited guests were cultists, as had been claimed by the police.
The legislator stated that the petitioner’s convocation was held at LAUTECH, and that he extended invitations to friends, including his brother, who was serving as a NYSC member in Ibadan, to join in the celebration.
“However, a quarrel broke out during the event, drawing the attention of the police. In their efforts to bring order, they opened fire, one bullet of which struck Damilola, causing him to fall to his death.”
He further stated that the petitioner is presently receiving treatment at the hospital after being struck on his left arm by a stray gunshot.
According to NAN, the member urged the House to move swiftly in order to bring the full force of the law down on the officers who are accused of killing the victim.
